The cost of living in Taiwan depends on the area you choose to live in and your lifestyle. Taipei is the most popular city for its convenience and work and entertainment choices, however the cost of living in rural areas and southern Taiwan is much lower.

While Taipei has the highest cost of living in Taiwan, it is still far less expensive than regional competitors. According to the Mercer Worldwide Cost of Living Survey 2011, Taipei was ranked 52nd, as compared to other major Asian cities such as Tokyo (no.2), Singapore (no.8), Hong Kong (no.9), Seoul (no.19), and Beijing (no.20). Taipei’s cost of living is still fairly reasonable.

One of the most enjoyable features of living in Taiwan is the food culture. You can get tasty but inexpensive food almost everywhere. Less than NT$300 may be sufficient for a daily food budget eating out in Taipei. Many expats manage to live comfortably in Taiwan even on a lower budget.
